Surprise Mail

Today I received a surprise gift in the mail from a dear friend. The gift brought a smile to my face, but finding the note and knowing who it was from brought a smile to my heart.  This friend knows what a hard time I have been going through. She also lives far away and can’t come and check-in on me so she took time to remind me of her love and encouragement with a thoughtful gift. Receiving it reminded me of the gifts of grace that I receive from God each day.

I’m talking about those daily surprises or blessings that we enjoy but often take for granted. James 1:17 says that every good and perfect gift is from the Father of the Heavenly lights. That means that each and every good thing that we have is a gift from God to us! They might be big things like:

Your house selling the same day that you put it on the market.
Being offered the job you’ve been praying for.
Getting to enjoy a nice vacation with your family.

Or they might be small things like:

Having just enough of your favorite ice cream left to make a nice bowl after the kids go to bed.
Your favorite outfit being clean.
Your coffee being especially good that day.

For me some of those blessings lately look like:

Getting snuggles from our fur babies.
Catching up with a friend even if it is brief.
My mom watching the kids when we needed help.
A husband who runs errands so I can take a nap.
Enjoying an afternoon outside on a warmer day.
Watching a 90’s Disney movie with my kids.

Whatever the gifts are, they are little messages from God saying, “I love you. I’m hear for you. I know what you’re going through. You matter to me.” Those messages are always nice to hear, but especially so when what we are going through is long and hard.

God can’t always remove the struggles, because sometimes they are actually for our ultimate good – even if they are painful now. He can however, come along side us and say, “Remember me? I’m still here with you. I love you and I made this good thing for you to remind you of that.”

What surprise gifts or daily blessings has God sent you lately?
